What do we do?

Collaborative, Stimulating Math Classes--Free of Charge

Every Sunday at the Wilmette Public Library, we host free math classes for children in grades 2-5 in the community. They aren't your typical school-style classes: they are filled with fun, enrichment, and laughter. Most sessions have a theme or practical application, such as managing a restaurant or planning a vacation. Want to learn more? Try it for yourself! Sign up using the link on our homepage.

Our Mission

As I progressed through my years in math, I found myself less and less excited to go to class. The work was getting harder, and there was just more of it. It also felt too theoretical and I felt that it wasn’t connecting to the world that school was supposed to prepare me for. To me, math was disconnected from reality; our sole purpose was to pass tests and get good grades rather than understand concepts and build applicable, foundational knowledge.
I knew that there had to be more to math than this, and my Algebra II class showed me exactly that. Learning about topics such as trigonometry and how it is used in many real-world situations, I realized that there was a point to all this. I learned that math is a tool that helps us make sense of the world around us.
The Wilmette Math Circle was born from this experience. I realized that other kids will go through similar situations and should see math—and hopefully other areas of school—in a better light. Children should learn about how math applies to the real world and that math can be fun.
At the WMC, our mission is to inspire excitement about math and learning through connections to real-world applications, but most importantly to present math in an enjoyable and engaging way. Wilmette Math Circle: where math and fun are one!
